Tumut River Works Program

Developing an ecologically healthy and self-sustaining environment along the Tumut River system.

Tumut River, NSW.

About the program

The goal of the Tumut River Works Program is to undertake bank stabilisation works and other complementary activities to support an ecologically healthy and self-sustaining riverine environment along the Tumut River.

The program aims to make the most of economic and water supply opportunities while preserving the environmental, cultural and recreational aspects of the river.

The program achieves this by:

  • stabilising active erosion sites along the river through physical works
  • maintaining existing river works
  • maintaining channel capacity for efficient delivery of water
  • conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage sites
  • enhancing environmental values including instream habitats to support native fish and platypus communities
  • managing stock access, woody weeds and other threats to waterway health.

The types of works undertaken include:

  • bank protection works including rock revetment and log revetment
  • fencing and revegetation
  • weed control and willow management
  • snag removal and re-alignment
  • stock watering points, installation of off-stream stock troughs.
Program outcomes

From 2011-2021, the program has:

  • installed new rockwork along 10.26 km
  • undertaken weed spraying along 59.13 km

Stakeholder engagement

The Water Group is committed to building and maintaining respectful, trusted and collaborative relationships with relevant communities and stakeholders to ensure the program achieves the best possible outcomes.

Local communities and stakeholders will be provided opportunities to have their say on the program throughout its stages of development and delivery, and this feedback will be used as a key input into project decision-making.

Engagement with First Nations people

We recognise and acknowledge the unique relationship and deep connection to country that Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Ngunnawal people have as the traditional owners and first peoples of this part of Australia. The input of traditional owner communities will play an important role in informing the approach undertaken with implementation of the program.
