About the project
Bare Creek Bike Park was opened to the community in 2020 after Property and Development NSW’s (PDNSW’s) Waste Asset Management Corporation (WAMC) remediated the former Belrose landfill site and transformed it into a world-class, six-hectare bike park.
The project required PDNSW to manage the design and construction of a mountain bike facility to cater for all levels of riders.
The state-of-the-art park, now managed by the Northern Beaches Council, features 1.6km of downhill bike trails, flow trails, skills and dirt jump areas, a pump track and bike maintenance stations, as well as dedicated walking tracks.
Open to the community seven days a week and highly acclaimed by the international mountain biking community, this is a truly remarkable transformation from tip to community treasure.
Background
The former Belrose Waste Management Centre ceased landfill operations in November 2014. WAMC currently oversees the management and maintenance of the closed site.
During landfill operations, an Enhancement Fund was established by the NSW Government and for every 1 tonne of waste, $2 was set aside for the future development of the site. The fund raised $3.5 million.
Given the large mountain biking community in the area, a mountain bike facility became the preferred future use for the site.
In November 2017, WAMC began discussions with Northern Beaches Council regarding the construction and management of a mountain bike facility on the site.
WAMC began earthworks and concept track design with local mountain bike community group, Trail Care, shortly after, and Bare Creek Bike Park was completed in December 2020.
Following its completion, PDNSW handed the facility to the Northern Beaches Council for ongoing management and maintenance.
